The minor emphasizes the following personal and technical skills: time, personnel, and resource management under duress; knowledge of U.S. military heritage, customs, and courtesies; planning and briefing under time constraints; current national defense issues; equal opportunity, sexual harassment, and military ethics; military justice; physical fitness; map reading and orienteering; leadership, management, and counseling skills under duress; oral, visual, and written communication skills in accordance with Army norms; small unit tactics. It provides marketable skills to students interested in government service, personnel management, and law enforcement. The Military Science Minor is limited to contracted Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) cadets only. A minimum grade point average of 2.5 is required in all units counted for completion of the minor.
Program Learning Objectives
- Create and sustain an organizational climate of trust in which all individuals are treated with dignity and respect
 - Develop Army leader attributes and competencies defined by the Army Leadership Requirements Model (ALRM)
 - Demonstrate proficiency in developing others across the institutional, operational, and self-developmental domains
 - Define the Army profession by demonstrating an understanding of the Army's culture, discipline, and values
 - Define and apply the principles of mission command
 - Define and apply the elements of command and control (C2)
 - Identify the Army warfighting functions and their integration into elements of combat power
 - Identify the fundamentals of the operations process necessary for leaders to understand, visualize, describe, direct, lead, and assess operations
 - Define, apply, and demonstrate the ability to think both critically and creatively
 - Demonstrate the ability to synchronize Army warfighting functions in Unified Land Operations (ULOs) in support of Joint Operations
 - Demonstrate understanding of the Operational Environment across all domains
 - Articulate understanding of the sustainment functions supporting Army operations
 - Demonstrate proficiency in the development, application, and assessment of training
 
Minor Requirements and Curriculum
- At least half of the units must be from upper-division courses (3000-4000 level).
 - At least half of the units must be taken at Cal Poly (in residence).
 - No more than one-third of the units will be taken with credit-no credit grading (CR/NC), not counting courses with mandatory CR/NC. Departments may further limit CR/NC grading if desired.
 - A minimum 2.0 GPA is required in all units counted for completion of the minor.
